OBESITY MEDICINE CLINIC : THE CARING WEIGHT LOSS CENTER IN WARRENTON

THE NEW WONDER DRUG FOR WEIGHT LOSS:

Zepbound (also known as Tirzepatide) is an injectable prescription medicine that may help adults with obesity, or with excess weight (overweight) who also have weight-related medical problems, lose weight and keep it off. Zepbound should be used with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.
Zepbound works differently by activating 2 hormone receptors.**It reduces appetite, food intake, body fat, and body weight.

History

Tirzepatide was approved for treatment to improve glycaemic control in adults with T2DM, as an adjunct to diet and exercise in the United States in May 2022, in the
European Union in September 2022, in Canada in November 2022, and in Australia in December 2022. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) considers it to be a
first-in-class medication. It was approved by the FDA for weight loss in November 2023.FDA approval of Zepbound was based on results from the phase 3
SURMOUNT-1 (adults with obesity or overweight and without type 2 diabetes)and SURMOUNT-2 (adults with obesity or overweight and with type 2 diabetes)
trials which both demonstrated a statistically significant reduction in body weightcompared to those who received placebo after 72 weeks of treatment.

In SURMOUNT-1, people taking Zepbound at the highest dose (15 mg) lost on average 48 pounds, and people taking the lowest dose (5 mg) lost on average 34
pounds (compared to 7 pounds on placebo).

In SURMOUNT-2, people taking Zepbound at the 15 mg dose experienced average weight reductions of 15.7% (34.4 pounds) and people taking Zepbound at the 10 mg dose experienced average weight reductions of 13.4% (29.8 pounds) compared to placebo 3.3% (7.0 pounds).

What is Zepbound?

Zepbound (tirzepatide) is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist which is used along with diet and exercise for chronic weight management in adult patients who are overweight(BMI ≥27 kg/m2) or obese (BMI ≥30 kg/m2).

How does Zepbound (tirzepatide) work ?

Zepbound is unique from other weight-loss injections, such as Wegovy (semaglutide). It’s the first weight-loss medication to target both glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptors.

GIP and GLP-1 are incretin hormones that your body naturally produces. Among other actions, incretins tell your pancreas to release more insulin after eating. They also help balance the production of new glucose (sugar). And, these hormones affect the passage of food through the gut and regulate feelings of hunger.

Incretins send these messages by attaching to their own special binding sites — the GIP and GLP-1 receptors. Zepbound works by stimulating your body’s natural GIP and GLP-1 hormones. But the medication’s effects last longer than your body’s natural incretins.
As a result, Zepbound has the following effects:

  • Your stomach empties more slowly, causing you to feel fuller for longer.
  • Your appetite decreases, and you eat less food.
  • The amount of food cravings you have decreases.
  • Your pancreas releases more insulin, lowering your blood glucose.
  • Your liver creates less new glucose.

Together, these effects lead to weight loss and lower blood glucose levels. That’s why tirzepatide is approved as two separate medications: Zepbound for chronic weight management and Mounjaro for Type 2 diabetes.

Zepbound Injections

How is Zepbound used?

  • Zepbound is injected under the skin (subcutaneously) of your stomach(abdomen), thigh, or upper arm.
  • Use Zepbound 1 time each week, at any time of the day.
  • Change (rotate) your injection site with each weekly injection. Do not use the same site for each injection.

Who cannot use Zepbound injection for weight loss? Anyone with a history of medullary thyroid cancer or pancreatitis should not use Zepbound.

What are the side effects of Zepbound ?

The most common side effects of Zepbound include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, stomach (abdominal) pain, indigestion, injection site reactions, feeling tired, allergic reactions, belching, hair loss, and heartburn. These are not all the possible side effects of Zepbound. Talk to your healthcare provider about any side effect that bothers you or doesn’t go away.

How can I deal with that?

The doctor can prescribe you nausea medication. Your body generally adapts and as you continue to use the medicine, these side effects will decrease.

Severe stomach problems – Stomach problems, sometimes severe, have been reported in people who use Zepbound. Tell your healthcare provider if you have stomach problems that are severe or will not go away.
